Where can you take your dog to the beach in Huntington Beach?
Huntington Dog Beach, on PCH between Goldenwest Street and Seapoint Avenue, is the only stretch of Huntington Beach where dogs are allowed on the sand. At City Beach, both state beaches, and Sunset Beach, dogs stay off the sand.
That surprises a lot of people. We have miles of coastline and one dog beach, so bring your pup to the wrong spot and your beach day can end before the towel hits the sand.
Lane’s take: I’m writing this one with a heavy heart. Our dog Rolo, a chocolate lab and Australian Shepherd mix raised right here in Huntington Beach, passed away about a month ago from lymphoma. He was 10. Some of our best memories and best photos are from Dog Beach, me tossing a frisbee into the shallow water and Rolo tearing after it. Funny thing: he was nervous around the pool and never much of a swimmer. But at Dog Beach, he’d happily charge into the ocean, as long as his paws could still touch the sand. This guide is for him.
Are dogs allowed on Huntington Beach beaches?
Only at Dog Beach. Every other HB beach keeps dogs off the sand, though most let leashed dogs on the bike path and in the parking lots. Here’s the rundown, beach by beach (checked October 2026):
| Beach | Dogs on the sand? | Where dogs can go | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Huntington Dog Beach (Goldenwest to Seapoint) | Yes | The sand and the water, on a 6-foot leash per city code | City of HB, Dog Beach Preservation Society |
| Huntington City Beach (pier area) | No | Leashed, on the beach service road only | City of HB |
| Huntington State Beach | No | Leashed (6 feet max) on the bike path and in the lots | California State Parks |
| Bolsa Chica State Beach | No | Leashed on the bike path and in the lots | California State Parks |
| Sunset Beach | No | Not on the beach | Visit Huntington Beach |
Service animals are the exception at the state beaches. And at Huntington State Beach, the Snowy Plover reserve at the south end, between the Talbert Channel and the Santa Ana River, is off-limits to dogs entirely.
Where is Huntington Dog Beach, and when is it open?
Dog Beach sits along PCH between Goldenwest Street and Seapoint Avenue, at 100 Goldenwest Street for your GPS. It’s open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, and it’s free (Visit Huntington Beach, checked October 2026).
It’s north of the pier, so don’t park downtown and plan to stroll over. Drive or bike to the bluff.
Where do you park for Dog Beach?
Two metered city lots on PCH between Goldenwest and Seapoint. Parking runs $3 an hour off-peak and $4 an hour from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend (City of HB, checked October 2026). The city’s annual beach parking pass works in both lots.
Those lots fill fast on warm weekends. Come early, especially with an older dog who’d rather skip the long walk.
Is Dog Beach accessible?
Yes. There are wheelchair ramps at the entrances near Goldenwest and Seapoint, and Dwight’s Beach Concession at 201 PCH loans beach wheelchairs free with a valid ID (Visit Huntington Beach).
Lane’s take: With a dog, the best place to be any day of the week is Dog Beach off Goldenwest. It’s an easy pin to drop when you’re telling a friend where to meet, and the drive in is quick. Goldenwest flows, without the stop-sign crawl of Main Street or the numbered streets. On off-peak days you can usually find good parking, the ramp makes getting down to the sand easy, and the vibe is always social and fun for dogs.
Do dogs have to be on a leash at Huntington Dog Beach?
Technically, yes. Huntington Beach Municipal Code Chapter 13.08 allows dogs at Dog Beach on a leash no longer than six feet. Visit Huntington Beach and the Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach both describe the sand as leash optional, which is how most locals treat it (checked October 2026).
Either way, the leash stays on in the parking lots, on the upper bluff, and on the walk to and from the sand. There’s no fence, and PCH is right above you.
Lane’s take: Honest answer: most dogs I see on the sand at Dog Beach are off leash, Rolo included, and I’ve never seen anyone get a ticket for it. Off the sand is a different story. Everywhere else, dogs stay leashed, period. But the law on the books says a 6-foot leash, so that’s the safe way to go.
What are the Dog Beach rules?
The posted rules are short and they’re enforced:
- Leash on in the lot and on the bluff, and a 6-foot leash on the sand per city code.
- Keep your dog in sight and under control.
- Pick up waste right away and toss it in the trash cans, not on the cliffs.
- No chasing wildlife.
- No aggressive dogs, sick dogs, or females in heat.
- No puppies under 4 months.
- Collar, current tags, and up-to-date vaccinations and license.
- Don’t let your dog run through other people’s beach setups.
No barbecues, either. Dog Beach is also 100% community funded by the Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach, so if you’re a regular, a donation keeps the bag dispensers full.
What should you bring to Dog Beach?
Fresh water and a bowl come first, because a thirsty dog will drink the ocean and regret it. Then a leash, extra waste bags, a towel, and some shade.
- Leash: required in the lot and on the bluff, and handy if your dog needs a time-out.
- Fresh water and a bowl: salt water makes dogs sick.
- Waste bags: the dispensers help, but bring your own backups.
- Towel: your back seat will thank you.
- Collar with ID tags: if your dog bolts, this is how you get them back.
- Shade or an umbrella: the sand gets hot by midday.
- Treats: the best recall tool you own.
Is Dog Beach a good idea for a dog’s first beach trip?
It can be, if you take it slow. Keep the leash on until you see how your dog reacts to waves, sand, and a few dozen new friends.
Not every dog is a natural water dog. Don’t toss them into the Pacific and hope instinct handles the paperwork. Watch for fatigue, heavy panting, or distress, and call it early if they’re done.
Can you bring a dog to Bolsa Chica or Huntington State Beach?
Yes, but not onto the sand or into the water. At both state beaches, leashed dogs are allowed on the paved bike path and in the parking lots only (California State Parks, checked October 2026).
At Huntington State Beach, the leash can be no longer than 6 feet, and dogs have to stay physically under control. Service animals are the only exception to the sand rule.
The good news: that bike path runs about 8.5 miles between the two state beaches, so a long leashed walk with an ocean view is easy. Just don’t confuse Bolsa Chica State Beach with the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve across PCH, where dogs aren’t allowed on the trails at all (California Department of Fish and Wildlife).
Are dogs allowed at the pier or on Huntington City Beach?
Not on the sand. Under the city’s beach and pier rules, dogs are allowed only on the beach service road and at Dog Beach, and they have to be leashed (City of HB, checked October 2026).
So the sand around the pier is a no for dogs, all the way south to Beach Boulevard. If you want the pier-and-Main-Street day and the dog-on-the-beach day, do them as two separate trips.
What about Sunset Beach?
No dogs on the beach. Visit Huntington Beach lists dogs alongside alcohol, glass, smoking, and tent camping as prohibited at Sunset Beach, the 1.5-mile stretch from Anderson Street to Warner Avenue.
It’s a beautiful, wide beach for a quiet day. Just leave the pup home for this one, or head south to Dog Beach.
When is Dog Beach not the right call?
When you want a quiet nap on the sand, or anyone in your group is nervous around off-leash dogs. Dogs run, bark, play, and cut straight through beach setups, and that’s the whole point.
It’s also not ideal for a dog who’s reactive, fearful, or still learning recall. A long leashed walk on the bike path between the state beaches is a calmer option. And if parking on a warm Saturday afternoon sounds like a nightmare, it usually is.
Lane’s take: There’s never a bad time for Dog Beach. Early mornings and sunset are cooler on summer days, and peak season gets busier, so plan for that. My real tip: pick a day when you’ve got an extra hour afterward. I’d always swing Rolo through a self-serve dog wash on the way home so he went back in the car clean, not coated in sand and salt.
